Boys and girls invited to check out Scouting programs on Sept. 26

NORTH PROVIDENCE – The Cub & Scouts BSA will be hosting joint open houses to learn all about the programs in North Providence on Thursday, Sept. 26, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the North Providence Library, 1810 Mineral Spring Ave.

Interested boys and girls as well as their parents are encouraged to attend this open house. The event will feature several games, crafts and activities designed for children of all ages to get a taste of what scouting is all about. Representatives of Troop 5 & Pack 5 will be available to answer all questions.

Designed for boys and girls in grades K-5, Cub Scouts combines outdoor activities, sports, academics such as STEM and more in a fun and exciting program that helps families teach ideals such as honesty, good citizenship, and respect. The town’s Pack 5 meets every Thursday through the school year, and has monthly community service projects and outdoor activities.

Some of the highlights scheduled for the Cub Scouts include fall and spring family camping, rocket building, ice skating, several community service projects and the Pinewood Derby where scouts build and race their own car.

Scouts BSA is designed for youth ages 11-18, combining outdoor activities, sports, academics, and more in a program that helps kids experience adventure. The troop meets every Thursday and camps one weekend each month. Some trips currently include backpacking, a medieval campout, winter camping, skiing, and spring whitewater rafting.

Older scouts aged 14-21 will be headed to Philmont Scout Reservation in New Mexico next summer. Philmont is the largest Scout camp, where scouts will be backpacking more than 100 miles, summiting numerous mountains and living off the land for 14 days. This is a once-in-a-lifetime trip, say organizers, where only a limited number of Scouts are able to go.

For those who can’t make the open house Sept. 26, check out the Scouts booth at the North Providence Fall Festival on Oct. 5 at Notte Park.
