Howard Road Bridge set for demolition

CUMBERLAND – Work to prepare for next spring’s replacement of the Howard Road Bridge is happening this month.

Demolition netting was delivered this week. Netting installation, construction fencing and other site prep work is taking place between Oct. 7 and Oct. 18.

The actual demolition work will begin Monday, Oct. 21. Work will continue through the end of November and possibly into the beginning of December, weather permitting. During the winter shutdown, the trusses will be rehabilitated and refurbished along with the ordering of the new floor beams and other new structural components required for the bridge deck.

The actual bridge replacement work will begin next spring. The Rhode Island Department of Transportation’s present schedule is to have the bridge substantially complete to open to traffic by next summer.

The Howard Road Bridge connects Abbott Run Valley Road in Cumberland with neighboring Massachusetts. It was shut down two years ago after one end of the bridge had been found to have dropped some four inches.
