PAWTUCKET – After a decade or longer of sitting under heavy plastic, the Miss Lorraine Diner on Mineral Spring Avenue got some fresh air last week.

Workers pulled away the last shreds of wood and plastic to reveal what will be Pawtucket’s second functioning dining car, joining the Modern Diner on East Avenue.

Jonathan Savage, owner of the mixed-use Lorraine Mills redevelopment at 560 Mineral Spring Ave., has said he expects to open the new diner by early December. The diner will serve the mill’s many tenants and the public at-large.

The Miss Lorraine, as revealed last week, is perched on a foundation of brick, seamlessly melding it with the façade of the mill complex, and has a set of two brick stairways joining together at the front to let customers in.

A look inside finds the classic dining car look, with refurbished appearance, and a kitchen space just off it on the inside of the building. Workers were busy putting the finishing touches on the restaurant space, which brings a splash of color to the front of a mill complex that has a vibrant base of artists and other businesses inside but a drab exterior in a mill area. It is located around the corner from Foolproof Brewing and the city’s waste transfer station, and is in the same complex with many other local businesses, including Crooked Current Brewery, White Dog Distilling and Mixed Magic Theatre.

A 1941 Worcester Streamliner Diner, the former Zeke’s Diner of Connecticut has its new name courtesy of Savage, who is in the process of trying to get it on the National Register of Historic Places. The Miss Lorraine comes from the same dining car family as Lamy’s Diner, previously restored and relocated from Massachusetts to the Henry Ford Museum in Michigan.
