Junior All-Staters capture 16th places at New England meet in Manchester, Conn.

MANCHESTER, Conn. – St. Raphael Academy juniors Darius Kipyego and Rachael Mongeau added another accolade to their remarkable cross country seasons last Saturday by earning All-New England honors for placing 16th in their respective races at the 85th annual New England Championships at Wickham Park’s 3.1-mile course.

A week after placing sixth at the state championship meet at Ponaganset High, Kipyego took 16th place in the boys’ race in a time of 16:14 that was just seven seconds shy of a top-10 finish. Kipyego is the first SRA male to land All-New England honors in 18 years.

Senior Nasavell Medeiros also finished 29th in 16:25 for the Saints, who placed 21st out of 30 teams (and fourth among the Rhode Island teams at the meet) in the standings.

Mongeau, who took third place at the state meet to earn her second straight First-Team All-State honor, crossed the finish line in the girls’ race in 19 minutes. That allowed the two-time Class C champion to become the Saints’ first female to receive All-New England recognition in 25 years.
