Cumberland cross country runners make their mark at N.E. Championships

MANCHESTER, Conn. – Three Cumberland residents helped the state champion La Salle Academy boys’ cross country team add a regional title to its long list of accomplishments on Saturday afternoon at the 85th annual New England Championships at Wickham Park.

La Salle, which scored 89 points, and Bishop Hendricken, which produced 138, were the top two squads in the 30-team standings.

Junior Jack McLoughlin took third place out of 260 runners by covering the 3.1-mile course in a time of 15:35 that was five seconds off the winning time. Sophomore Adam Thibodeau was the fifth and final La Salle runner to score points, as he placed 42nd in 16:34, and a second behind him in 43rd place was his classmate, Jack Casey.

Cumberland High also sent its boys’ team to the meet and placed 12th. The Clippers’ top finishers were sophomores Ethan Carpenter, who took 36th place in 16:32, and Henry Dennen, who finished 65th in 16:48.

Junior Owen Molis (17:15), sophomore John Walker (17:30), and freshman Cole McCue (17:30) were CHS’s next three finishers.

In the girls’ 3.1-mile race, Cumberland native Rachael Mongeau, who is a junior at St. Raphael Academy, placed 16th out of 263 runners in 19 minutes and CHS junior Olivia Belt finished 58th in 19:48.

The next three finishers for the Clippers were junior Bailee Brown (21:10), senior Shakira Depina (21:13), and freshman Grace Carr (21:13).
