Words Unlimited names DeAngelis Lifetime Achievement Award winner

CRANSTON – Smithfield native and former Community College of Rhode Island women’s volleyball coach Ray DeAngelis will be among the honorees when Words Unlimited, the statewide organization of sportswriters, sportscasters, and sports publicists, conducts its 74th annual Sports Awards Banquet on Sunday at the Cranston Country Club.

DeAngelis will receive the Bill Cawley Lifetime Achievement Award. He was the Knights’ coach for nine seasons, eight as their head coach and one as an assistant, and he produced an overall record of 207-98.

In DeAngelis’ final season in 2008, the Knights posted a 38-6 record, which gave them the highest win percentage in the program’s history, and made their first trip to the NJCAA Division II National Championships.

The reception will start at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are priced at $35 each for adults and $19 for children ages 12 and under and may be obtained by contacting Words Unlimited president John Parente at 401-826-0555.
