NORTH SMITHFIELD – After three years as a finalist, 8th-grader Gracie Rei has claimed the title of North Smithfield Spelling Bee Champion.

Rei won the North Smithfield Spelling Bee held last Friday, Feb. 7, at North Smithfield Middle School. She faced representatives from every grade at NSMS, including 5th-grader Nathan Tessitore, 6th-grader Keira Harnois and 7th-grader Jackson Boutelle.

English teacher Leah Latimer coordinated the bee, and History teacher John Galoski served as emcee.

The bee went on for 11 rounds, and students were asked to spell many difficult words, including regulatory, structural and contemplate.

Rei placed first after correctly spelling discrepancy and attainment. Boutelle is the runner up.
