Children invited to build Pinewood Derby cars Monday

NORTH PROVIDENCE – Come design and paint your own race car in the North Providence Library Community Room next Monday, Feb. 24, from 6 to 8 p.m.

This event is free and open to all children of school age. Cub Scout Pack 5 will be providing wooden blocks, tools and volunteer woodworkers to carve, and assorted paints and materials to finish the designs.

The pinewood derby is a gravity-powered race that has been a national tradition among Scouts across the country.

“(It’s) a fun event where the kids don’t even know they are learning,” said Lori Roberts, a Scout parent. “It is STEM learning at its finest … science, technology, engineering and math applied to make the car go fast.”

All cars will then be raced at the Pack 5 Annual Pinewood Derby Race on Thursday, Feb. 27, at 6 p.m. at St. Thomas Church Hall on Fruit Hill Avenue in Providence.

There will be refreshments, prizes and trophies awarded directly following the races for all guests. “I like building a fast car with my dad and then watching it go really fast down the track,” said Benjamin Brooks, Webelo Scout and 4th-grader at Greystone School.
