Sr. Mary Ruth Tamulis – North Providence

Sr. Mary Ruth Tamulis – North Providence

Sr. Mary Ruth Tamulis, FMM, of 399 Fruit Hill Ave. North Providence, passed away March 3, 2020 at St. Antoine Residence, North Smithfield.

Although Sr. Ruth’s childhood was spent in Dorchester, Mass., she loved saying that she was born in Boston close to where lanterns were hung to signal Paul Revere. This was on July 29, 1926. She attended Boston State College receiving a Bachelor in Education and Economics in 1948. In March 15, 1949, Ruth entered the FMM Pre-Novitiate, after teaching for some months in an Elementary School in South Boston.

After her first profession, September, 1951, Ruth was sent to FMM house in Rome and then was missioned to India. Her new mission was in Hyderabad teaching in a high school and some administrative work. Ruth professed her final vows in Hyderabad, September 17, 1959. At one point, along with the Telugu High School and the Montessori School, the FMM sisters were responsible for the education of 3,000 children. The FMM community was typically an international one and, after 12 years, Ruth was missioned to other places within the state, always to work in education. She was also missioned to be the animator of the community at the FMM College in Vijayawada. During some of her years in India, there was an exciting assignment at a foundation where a dam, part of a hydroelectric project, was being constructed nearby. One time when floods ravaged the Krishna River and washed away a bridge, Ruth missed the opportunity to visit Bombay on the occasion of Pope Paul VI’s visit.

Ruth returned to the United States in 1974. She studied Theology and Scripture in Boston and then was missioned to our Fall River community where she taught in Espiritu Santo School until 1978 when she was missioned to St. Michael’s, Arizona to teach and work among the Navajo people. Returning to Fall River to teach in 1980, Ruth was there for nine years and then was missioned to St. Louis to be a local coordinator and vocation work. Waukegan, Illinois was her next mission where she did pastoral work and taught English in the Novitiate until 1994. She returned to Fall River then to continue teaching and doing pastoral work. This time period also included being missioned to Central Falls and West Greenwich, RI where she continued pastoral ministry and teaching English to the Novices. In 2009 she was missioned to Holy Family Community at Fruit Hill to be local bursar and helper at the Mission Resource Center. Ruth was part of the Assisted Living at Fruit Hill until recently when she was missioned to St. Antoine’s. The communities where Ruth lived always enjoyed her quiet humor and her breaking out into song, on many occasions, remembering all the words. She also lent her lovely voice to sing the Alleluia at daily masses.

Visiting hours will be held on Monday, March 9, from 4-8 p.m., in Holy Family Chapel, 39 Fruit Hill Avenue, North Providence. Funeral Tuesday, at 11 a.m. in Holy Family Chapel. Burial will follow in Holy Family Cemetery.
