WOONSOCKET – Mayor Lisa Baldelli-Hunt announced on Friday the city will close several streets on the weekends of May 22 and May 29 to prepare for the reopening of restaurants around Market Square.

The partial closing of roads will take place between 6 and 10 p.m. on Friday, May 22 and Friday, May 29; between noon and 10 p.m. on Saturday, May 23 and Saturday, May 30; and between noon and 10 p.m. on Sunday, May 24. The road closings will allow restaurants around Market Square to set up tables on sidewalks, in parking lots and on roads to increase outdoor dining space in compliance with guidance released by state officials.

The order will also allow restaurants with liquor licenses to serve patrons who are eating food outside.

Several city restaurants, including Christopher's Kitchen and Bar on Market Square and Fazzini's on Diamond Hill Road, have announced on their Facebook pages that they plan to open for outdoor dining on May 22 following the easing of restrictions by state officials.

"Our restaurants have been devastated due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We have a moral obligation to take quick and decisive action to support their efforts as they attempt to reopen and offer outside dining services," said Baldelli-Hunt.

According to the announcement, the Main Street area of Market Square will still be accessible by vehicle during the closings.
