R.I. Hockey Hall of Fame, R.I. Reds Heritage Society announce postponements

Class of 2020 will be inducted on Aug. 27, 2021 at Twin River Event Center

LINCOLN -- This wasn't the news that Rhode Island hockey fans wanted to hear.

But with sporting events getting postponed and canceled on an almost daily basis throughout the country, the inevitable happened: The R.I. Hockey Hall of Fame and the R.I. Reds Heritage Society jointly announced on Saturday morning the postponements of their annual enshrinement and reunion events that were scheduled in August due to the COVID-19 pandemic and "the social distancing and health concerns brought on by it.".

“It is with great regret, but with an abundance of caution and concern, that this well considered decision has been made,” Hall of Fame chairman Vincent Cimini said in a press release. “Erring on the side of caution, we are now planning to combine our Class of 2020 inductions with those of our Class of 2021 next year.”

The “Class of 2020” inductees-elect, which include North Providence icon Lou Cimini and former Mount Saint Charles standouts Paul Guay, David Capuano, and Garth Snow, as well as Tim Army, Jack Ferreira, and Jim Fullerton, will now be honored on Aug. 27, 2021 at the Twin River Event Center, which is hoping to open again after Labor Day weekend. Buster Clegg, who was slated to receive the Hall’s 2020 Malcolm Greene Chace Award for his contributions to hockey, will also be honored.

While Cimini reported his postponement, the R.I. Reds Heritage Society announced it was pulling the plug on its 20th annual Reunion Weekend that was supposed to take place at Warwick's Goddard Park, Andre Mayer, who is the society's president, reported that the three-day reunion celebration will also take place next summer at Twin River.

Those who have already purchased tickets can expect a full refund within the next few weeks, Cimini reported.
