City receives $40,500 to protect wastewater treatment facility

WOONSOCKET – The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management and the Rhode Island Infrastructure Bank have awarded $40,500 in matching grant funds to the city of Woonsocket for improvements to protect structures within the city’s wastewater treatment plant from flood waters from the Blackstone River.

The funds were part of the Green Economy and Clean Water Bond approved by voters in 2018.

The grant program traces its roots to 2010 when extreme rains caused historic flooding of the Pawtuxet, Pawcatuck and Blackstone rivers and impacted wastewater treatment facilities in parts of Rhode Island. As part of the program, $4.7 million in matching grant funds were awarded to 15 municipalities across the state.
