Mount postpones graduation to summer

WOONSOCKET – Mount Saint Charles Academy announced last week the school is postponing commencement events and hopes to hold a modified graduation celebration in late July and early August.

School officials said they hope to hold a prom, commencement Mass, senior supper and academic convocation. The events will culminate with a graduation ceremony on the school campus on Aug. 2.

According to a press release, the events will include social distancing measures. If COVID-19 restrictions still do not allow for a traditional commencement, school officials said they are considering several backup options, including an outdoor ceremony, multiple smaller ceremonies or a virtual graduation video.

“We surveyed the students on what they wanted and pushed the date back to give ourselves time to plan events that are both memorable and safe,” said Mount Saint Charles President Alan Tenreiro. “Hopefully there will be fewer restrictions by this time that allow us more options when planning. There’s a lot we can do to recognize our graduating seniors on social media, but there’s no substitute for having them together.”

Other events, including a middle school honors night, an eighth grade completion ceremony and grades nine through 11 honors nights will be held virtually.
