Dragon Boat races and Taiwan Day festival canceled

PAWTUCKET – Due to concerns stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic, the Blackstone Valley Tourism Council has reluctantly canceled this year’s Rhode Island Dragon Boat Races and Taiwan Day Festival.

“After several discussions with city officials, sponsors and participants, we made the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 dragon boat event scheduled for Sept. 12 at Festival Pier in Pawtucket,” said Robert Billington, president and CEO of the Tourism Council.

Lillian Hung, of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Boston, still wants to bring Taiwanese entertainment to this year’s Pawtucket Arts Festival.

“We anticipate the Rhode Island Dragon Races and Taiwan Day Festival will be back in 2021, and the Tourism Council will do everything possible to make the event better than ever,” Tourism Council Program Director Michael P. Martin said.
