Former state Rep. Albert Brien dies

WOONSOCKET – Albert Brien, former president of the Woonsocket City Council and a longtime participant in city politics, has died.

Brien was a former state representative and U.S. Army veteran who later served as president of the Woonsocket City Council. In 2018, at the age of 77, he launched an unsuccessful bid for mayor against Mayor Lisa Baldelli-Hunt. He was a professional real estate appraiser who also served stints as the director of finance and administration and director of human services for the city of Woonsocket.

The announcement came Friday afternoon in an email from the campaign of his son, Council Vice President Jon Brien, who is currently running for mayor. According to the email, the younger Brien is suspending all upcoming campaign events until further notice.
