R.I. Beekeepers announce Bee School courses

BRISTOL – The Rhode Island Beekeepers Association is offering two courses in beekeeping for beginners beginning in January. Due to COVID-19, the classes will be held online via Zoom. Each course will be held twice a week for five weeks.

The course will cover everything the beginning beekeeper needs to know. Subjects will include getting started, the honeybee life cycle, choosing an apiary site, buying bees and equipment, assembly of the hive, installing package bees, catching swarms, nectar sources, bee diseases and pests, hive inspections and wintering. A variety of beekeeping equipment will be displayed and demonstrated.

The cost for the five-week course is $75 per person. This includes membership dues in the Rhode Island Beekeepers Association through Dec. 31, 2021. Advance registration is required.

• Beginner Beekeeping Course with Betty Mencucci: Wednesday and Thursday, 7-8:15 p.m., Jan. 27 and 28, Feb. 3 and 4, Feb. 10 and 11, Feb. 17 and 18, Feb. 24 and 25.

• Beginner Beekeeping Course with Steve Burke: Monday, 7-8:30 p.m. and Tuesday 7-8 p.m., Jan. 11 and 12, Jan. 18 and 19, Jan. 25 and 26, Feb. 1 and 2, Feb. 8 and 9.
