Remembering John Muckler

John Muckler, a longtime Lincoln resident, passed away on Jan. 4, 2021, at the age of 86.

He was known as a “hockey lifer,” part owner, general manager, director of player personnel, director of hockey operations, head coach and player. He coached the Rhode Island Reds for four years and was part of five Stanley Cup championships in various roles. He coached the Edmonton Oilers to the Stanley Cup championship in 1990.

The Sporting News named him NHL Executive of the Year for the 1996-97 season and the top coach of all of minor league hockey in 1979.

Wayne Gretzky, one of the greatest hockey players of all time, said of Mr. Muckler, “He personally took my career to another level.”

Many of us remember the day he brought the Stanley Cup to Lincoln.
