The painting class offered at Paint and Vino on Friday, Jan. 15, is called Coastal Breeze. The class costs $35, goes from 7 to 9:30 p.m. and can be done in person or virtually.

PAWTUCKET – Paint and wine make a great pairing, particularly in a pandemic, and this fun hobby is attracting new enthusiasts as winter starts to drag.

Pawtucket’s Paint and Vino, 150 Main St., has new painting classes and events throughout January, giving participants the option to take classes in person or at home.

“We offer stroke-by-stroke paint classes in a fun environment,” owner Rachel Araujo says.

For those who want to take the relaxation to the next level, they also offer two complimentary beverages.

When Paint and Vino could no longer do in-person classes and parties last March, they started holding virtual paint parties in May and kept running them even after they reopened in June. The virtual classes are through Zoom and follow along with the live class in the studio.

“We supply all the materials and beverages to be picked up an hour and a half before the class,” said Araujo. “The set-up at home is interactive, you can ask questions as the instructor can hear and see you.”

The virtual option presented the opportunity for holiday parties and bringing people closer together.

The events run on some Wednesday nights as well as Thursday through Sunday. This Thursday, Jan. 14, the class is called Hand Picked, where participants can paint a bouquet of flowers in a mason jar. The class runs from 7 to 9:30 p.m. and costs $35. Reservations can be made at

Araujo said a group of three people can sit together, but if one person comes in, they will be seated a distance from other people. Included in a reservation is a seat, two complimentary beverages, including wine, beer or soda, and all the materials needed to make an amateur’s masterpiece.

The same items are included in a virtual reservation to be picked up before class. On the day of the class, a Zoom link will be emailed.

All COVID-19 protocols are followed, including temperatures taken at the door, masks when participants aren’t eating or drinking, and frequent sanitizing.

This Friday, Jan. 15, the painting is Coastal Breeze on canvas. Family paint night is this Sunday, Jan. 17, from 1 to 3:30 p.m. with tickets costing $25 for families. On Jan. 21 is the Starlit Snowman with LED lights. There is also a couples’ session on Jan. 29, from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Each person paints their own canvas and they hang it as one. One painting is a bottle of wine being poured, while the other is the glass receiving the wine.

Paint and Vino now offers a third service of “paint party in a box.” They ship nationwide and have also started shipping internationally.

“The box turns into your easel to paint on, with instructions,” Araujo said. There are pre-recorded instructions so painters can stop, pause and rewind, and watch it on their own time.

“Art is very therapeutic; you can get lost and engrossed in it,” she said.

Another option, within COVID-19 limits, is to plan a party or get-together with Paint the Town Studios, a mobile paint studio. The owners, husband and wife John and Phyllis Iacona, used to have a storefront in Cranston, but in 2018, changed to a mobile business.

The Iaconas bring the materials and instructor for all sorts of functions, and the customer chooses the portrait.

As one would imagine, the pandemic has put a serious dent into bookings, said the Iaconas. They are still offering paint parties, but follow state COVID-19 guidelines limiting the number of people per party and spacing everyone out with masks.

Paint the Town Studios requires a $100 deposit to hold the date of the party, and then $30 per person on the day of the party.

“It’s a fun thing to do,” Iacona said about parties. “Just don’t take it too seriously. When you pay attention to the instruction, the portraits come out great.”
