Anne Elizabeth Greenleaf

Anne Elizabeth Greenleaf

Anne Elizabeth (Monzert) Greenleaf, of Greenville, formerly of North Scituate, passed away on April 2 at the age of 91 years.

Born on November 15, 1929, at the former Madison Hospital in Manhattan, she was one of three daughters of the late Leonard and Isabel (Gould) Monzert.

Mrs. Greenleaf was raised in West Newton, Mass., where she graduated from Newton High School in 1947. She received a degree in French at Middlebury College in 1951 and began her teaching career at the Gould Academy in Bethel, Maine. In 1953, Miss. Monzert married Robert L. Greenleaf of Bethel.

She took a hiatus from teaching in the late 1950s and early 1960s to raise their three children. In 1963, the family moved to Scituate, R.I., and she held various substitute teaching jobs at that time. Thereafter, she earned a master’s degree from the University of Rhode Island, and resumed full-time teaching at Coventry High School, where she was chair of the language department for a time. She retired from teaching in 1990.

Mrs. Greenleaf was a lover of music, and supporter of the R.I. Philharmonic Orchestra. She was an exceptional tennis player, and a member of the Rally Point Racquet Club for many years, traveling to championship tournaments around the country. She played competitive tennis into her 80s. She was an ardent Francophile, with a special affinity for the French language. She was also a member of the R.I. Chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI-RI).

Mr. and Mrs. Greenleaf celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 2013, a year before his passing. Mrs. Greenleaf will be remembered for this devotion to her marriage, along with her formidable determination, intellectual curiosity, exceptional moral character, and special devotion to her daughter, Nancy. She always made the best of every situation, no matter how difficult the situation may have been.

Mrs. Greenleaf is survived by son Stephen L. Greenleaf, of North Scituate, wife, Joanne, and their two sons Ryan and Eric; daughter, Nancy E. Greenleaf, of Greenville; and son Mark S. Greenleaf of Foster, wife Lori, and their three children Rachel, Elizabeth, and Alan. She was the sister of the late Isabel Cogswell and the late Ethel Thrower. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
