Lincoln High School senior prom set for May 28

Officials eye outdoor graduation at CCRI

LINCOLN – Lincoln High School seniors will have the opportunity to attend the prom for the first time this year, after the pandemic canceled last year’s junior and senior proms.

Rob Mezzanotte, principal of LHS, said the senior prom is set for Friday, May 28, at the Atlantic Beach Hotel in Newport.

“We are currently working with a senior event planning committee, which includes parents, administrators and faculty, to plan for a fun, memorable and safe event for our seniors,” Mezzanotte said.

“Our committee is working closely with our venue, as well as our senior class, to host a prom that features activities that kids will enjoy, while also ensuring that we are adhering to all safety guidelines as outlined by the Rhode Island Department of Health,” he added.

The high school is also looking to firm up plans for this year’s graduation. Supt. Larry Filippelli said he’s hoping the event will be closer to normal, while still adhering to pandemic guidelines.

As of right now, he said LHS is looking at hosting an in-person, outdoor graduation at the Community College of Rhode Island.

Under the current guidelines, he said the maximum capacity would be 500 with masks and social distancing.

“That sounds like a lot of people, but Lincoln’s graduation ceremonies typically pack the CCRI field house. My first year as superintendent I felt like I was at a college graduation, there were so many people,” he said. “Thousands of people come every year. We want to be able to have more families there to support the kids, if we can do that safely.”

Filippelli said the district is waiting to hear back from CCRI on their graduation plans.
