PHS football team blanks Toll Gate for second win

CRANSTON – Junior tailback Marcus Carpenter ran for 160 yards and a 5-yard touchdown on 18 carries and the Ponaganset High football team turned two blocked punts into touchdowns last Saturday night in the Chieftains’ 33-0 victory over Toll Gate High in their Division IV meeting at Cranston Stadium.

Junior John Zambarano, who scored the game-winning touchdown in the Chieftains’ season-opening, double-overtime victory over the Exeter-West Greenwich/Prout co-op team, recovered one of the blocks for another score, as did one of his classmates, Sal Bianca.

Those touchdowns and Carpenter’s third TD of the season helped Ponaganset take a 20-0 lead at the break, and in the second half, the Chieftains saw junior quarterback Chris Brennan reach the end zone on a 2-yard keeper and sophomore tailback Nick Baccala tack on a 3-yard touchdown run.

The Chieftains are back in action on Friday with a 6 p.m. matchup against neighboring Scituate, which because of COVID issues, has yet to play a game this season.
