Garcia recognized with national volunteer award

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – For this year’s National Volunteer Week, celebrated April 18-25, H&R Block announced Lauren Garcia, of Smithfield, as one of six associates across the country awarded with the company’s national Make Every Block Better Volunteer Award.

Garcia won for her supporting and mentoring new barbers and providing grooming services to people experiencing homelessness, a press release states. She is a senior tax analyst in Smithfield and has worked for H&R Block for 16 years.

As a winner in the fostering entrepreneurship category, Garcia was selected to direct a $7,500 donation to The Rhode Island Dream Center, the charity of her choice, from The H & R Block Foundation. Garcia and her husband, Emmanuel, have owned Details Barbershop, a local small business, since 2011. Since they began, the Garcias have seen the start of at least two new barber shops started by former employees. Garcia and her husband enjoy mentoring new barbers. “The education of cutting hair is a small aspect of it. It’s learning how to run a business, manage their money. It ties to what I do at H&R Block – teaching them how to be smart with their money, provide a good service, and build a customer base,” she said. For nearly six years, the Garcias have provided grooming services to those in need by partnering with local homeless shelters and programs. Individuals across the company are eligible to be nominated for their commitment to volunteerism and their community.
