Mancieri: Let’s crush COVID

Over the past year, we have all gone through this pandemic which has brought about much loss, reflection, and a new way of living. However, this is our chance to get our lives back to the way it used to be and all the things that we simply took for granted. Whoever thought that we would not be able to see or hug our family members, spend quality time with our close friends, or have to cancel our favorite public events? But with the arrival of the vaccine, we can all see a light at the end of the tunnel and an end to a life wearing masks, social distancing, and Zoom meetings.

I am writing this letter to encourage you all to sign up and get the vaccine. This is our way to do our part and get the normalcy back into our lives, to protect our loved ones, make our economy thrive, and bring our society back together. Some may have their reasons not to but I would ask that you not think of this as something that you are doing for yourself but something that you are doing for others. If someone said to you that you needed to do something to help a loved one, you would most likely say yes and this situation is no different.

If not for yourself, I’m asking you to do it for the friend who you know who is still unemployed or underemployed and looking for work. Do it for the single parent who is trying to homeschool their children and also do a full time job. Do it for the senior citizen who worked their whole life to enjoy retirement and see their grandchildren grow up. Do it for the small business owner who goes to work every day but does not take home a paycheck if their sales don’t cover their expenses. This is not about politics, it’s not about religion, it’s not about liberty or rights; it is about humanity.

While some may not understand the importance of social events, let me tell you why they are important. I have joined several committees for the very simple reason of trying to improve the community that I live in and that I love. I have so much respect for these committee members who chose to spend their time to unite and better their community. These committees are more than just a group of people, they become families that bond together to share their time and talents to make great things happen in our community. Most importantly, they make our community a place that people want to live, work, and visit. I am committed along with the wonderful people that I serve with to bringing these events back to reunite our community and showcase the beautiful and historic city that is Woonsocket. To do that, we need to get to 70-80 percent immunity of our total population. Every single resident over the age of 16 is now able to get this vaccine and make this happen. The website is www.vaccinateri.org . Let’s do this together and crush COVID-19.
