Maureen Hickey – Cumberland

Maureen Hickey, 98, of Cumberland, passed away on Friday, April 16, 2021, at the Rhode Island Hospital, Providence.

She was married to the late John J. Hickey for 46 years. Born in New York, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Frank and Sarah (Clarke) Ogden. She resided in Cumberland for 54 years, previously residing in New York City.

She began her career as a executive secretary to the Prime Minister of Hyderabad and also the Ambassador of Pakistan. Later she moved to Cumberland, where she was the former guidance counselor secretary at the Cumberland High School for 25 years until her retirement. Generations of students remember Mrs. Hickey's voice as it echoed through the halls of Cumberland High School during announcements and the occasional call to the principal's office.

Maureen was a communicant of the Historic St. Joseph Church and a was an active member of the St. Joseph Women's Club and coordinated the church flea markets. In her retirement, she shared her time with the sick at area nursing homes.

She enjoyed dancing, traveling and some of her favorite destinations were Greece and Italy. Those who loved her will always remember her kindness, generosity and compassion. Maureen's legacy will be held closely with all of her beloved friends and family. At the age of 98, Maureen was still driving, eating whatever she desired, as well as continuing to defy any recommendations from her doctors and just about anyone else!

She leaves her beloved daughter, Jacqueline Patenaude, and her husband, Douglas, of Canterbury, Conn., and their four children, Shane, Skye, Kameron and Olivia, and two additional granddaughters, Allison and Dana, and five great-grandchildren, Ashley, Tyler, Breanna, Joey and Emma, all from her late son, James J. Hickey; as well as her two nieces, Sue and Judi; and her godson, Willie. She was also predeceased by her siblings and one granddaughter, Lisa.

Maureen's Life Celebration was held with visiting hours followed by a Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, April 24, 2021, in the Historic St. Joseph Church, Mendon Road, Cumberland. Burial followed in the St. Joseph Cemetery. Arrangements were entrusted to the care of the J. J. Duffy Funeral Home.
