Robert Gilbert - Cumberland

Robert “Bob” Gilbert, 85, passed away at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, May 4, from acute myeloid leukemia. He was born in South Kingston, on July 28, 1935, the son of Basil and Lois Gilbert. The son of a professor at the University of Rhode Island, he grew up in the college community. At URI he met his wife, Meredith Molitor, and they have been married for 58 years. They have lived in Cumberland for the past 53 years.

He had several careers: serving in the United States Air Force, an elementary school science teacher in Smithfield, an electronics technician at Foxboro Company, and a salesman in the hardware department at Sears. His passions included tools and trains, but most of all, his four sons, of whom he was amazed and proud: Bill (Rofishah), Bruce (Maryellen), Ben, and Brian. He was also very proud of his six grandchildren: Cristina, Kevin, Benjamin, Abigail, Jack, and Andrew. He is survived by two sisters: Marie Cutler and Donna Sciola, and he was predeceased by an older sister Dr. Margaret Gilbert.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, May 10, 2021, at 11 a.m., at Four Corners Community Chapel, 200 Angell Road, Cumberland.
