Carnival kicks off summer reading at NP Library

NORTH PROVIDENCE – To begin a series of summer reading events at the North Providence Union Free Library, 1810 Mineral Spring Ave., staff are hosting a carnival on Wednesday, June 30, from 1:30 to 3 p.m., and Thursday, July 1, from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

The event will feature outdoor carnival games, balloon animals, a popcorn machine and prizes, and children can sign up for summer reading and pick up a summer reading packet. The summer reading theme this year is “Tails and Tales.”

“We have missed the kids so much,” said Jenny Durant, children’s librarian. “We are so excited. It’s so nice to see them coming back.”

Summer reading-related events are as follows:

• On Wednesday, July 7, at 1:30 p.m., the Audubon Society will be visiting the library with owls.

• Join local artist Sue Greco to sketch and paint your pet on Thursday, July 8, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Open to children ages 8 and older; must be accompanied by an adult.

• Outdoor Pet Parlor takes place on Wednesday, July 14, from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Children should bring a stuffed animal from home to be “groomed” during this event. Open to all ages.

• On Thursday, July 15, the library will host a virtual animal trivia contest at 6 p.m.

• Children can drop off a favorite stuffed animal at the library to take part in a stuffed animal sleepover from Monday, July 19, to Tuesday, July 20. “We’ll see what kind of mischief happens when stuffies sleep over with other stuffie friends at the library,” staff said.

• Join Nancy from Fuzzy Animal Adventures and meet some animal friends on Monday, July 19, at 5 p.m.

• Play Feed the Frogs with your family outside on the giant Candyland board Monday-Wednesday, July 19-21, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and Thursday, July 22, from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

• Join Family Bingo outside on Wednesday, July 28, at 1:30 p.m., and Thursday, July 29, at 6 p.m.

• Harry Potter week will run July 31 through Aug. 6 and will feature Harry Potter trivia with Patrick Kinney on Saturday, July 31, at 6 p.m. Costumes encouraged.

• An End of Summer event will feature a dance party with DJ Venom on Wednesday, Aug. 11. Time to be determined.

• “Tale-Gating” story time takes place in the pool parking lot behind the library Tuesdays, June 22 and 29, July 6, 13, 20, and 27, and Aug. 3 and 10, at 10 a.m. for ages newborn to 5.

• Join Miss Talia and have fun creating art on Thursdays, July 1, 8, 15, 22, and 29, at 10 a.m. For ages 2-5.

• Join Miss Ann and Miss Stacy to create works using 3D pens. For grades 3-5. Tuesdays, June 29, July 6, 20, and 27, and Aug. 3, at 6:30 p.m.

• A Tuesday Book Club takes place July 13 and Aug. 10, at 6:30 p.m. for grades 3-5.

• Bricks and Books takes place Mondays, June 21 and 28, July 12, 19, and 26, and Aug. 2, at 6:30 p.m. Join Miss Hailey-Rose for a story and then build creations out of Legos. For grades K-2. On July 26, join Mary Palumbo at 6 p.m. as she reads from her latest book.

• From June 21 through July 30, bring in a favorite stuffed animal to be part of the library’s Stuffed Animal Zoo. Children will decorate a habitat for their animal and tell everyone a little bit about their pet. There are 10 crates available each week for display.

• Take and make craft kits will be available each week from June 21 through Aug. 13 for kids to take home and make. New crafts are set out on Mondays and are handed out all week while supplies last.
