NP outdoor track teams grab top-six places at Northern Division meet

JOHNSTON – Several athletes on the North Providence High boys’ and girls’ outdoor track and field teams placed in the top six of their events at last weekend’s two-day Northern Division championship meet.

The throwing events were held last Saturday at Lincoln High’s Ferguson Field, and the rest of the events took place the following afternoon at Johnston High’s Polisena Stadium.

In the girls’ meet, the 4x400 relay team of senior Jenna Riley and juniors Isabella Gemma, Leandhy Williams, and Paula Zhuang delivered NP’s best finish of the weekend, as the squad took third place in 5:00.44.

The 4x100 relay team of senior Samantha Williams, freshman Khadijah Leigh, and Leandhy Williams and Riley also finished fourth in 58.49 seconds, as did sophomore Eva St. Germain in the discus with a throw of 85 feet, eight inches. Riley also finished sixth in the 400 meters in 1:11.39.

The boys’ team fared well in the relays, as the 4x100 team of junior Jevon Melendez, sophomores Vince Harris and Wahabu Kamara, and freshman Colin Roderick took fifth place in 50.36 seconds and the 4x400 squad of junior Aidan Frezza, sophomore Adedamola Owode, Kamara, and Roderick placed sixth in 4:02.66.

Both teams will return to action on Sunday at Providence’s Conley Stadium for the boys’ Class B and the girls’ Medium Schools championship meets.
