SRA softball team wins twice, earns share of Div. I regular-season crown

NORTH PROVIDENCE – The St. Raphael Academy softball team clinched a share of the Division I regular-season title on Monday afternoon by posting a 4-1 victory over North Providence High at Notte Park that improved the Saints’ first-place record to 10-1.

The Saints, who haven’t lost a game since dropping their season opener to defending state champion La Salle Academy on May 7, lead second-place Pilgrim High – which they topped in extra innings last Saturday night in Warwick – by a full game in the standings.

The Saints will host Coventry in their finale on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Hank Soar Complex before turning their full attention to the state playoffs. If the Saints win that game, or Pilgrim (9-2) loses its final game on its schedule to Coventry on Wednesday, then the Saints will own sole ownership of the regular-season title.

Last Saturday’s victory on the road over the Patriots saw SRA battle back from a 3-0 deficit after five innings of play and post a 4-3 win in nine innings. Senior Tori Jacques collected three hits and scored twice to lead the Saints offensively, and junior ace pitcher Samantha Simonds, who tossed a five-hitter, highlighted the comeback with a two-run double in the sixth inning.

Monday’s victory over the Cougars saw Simonds fire a two-hitter that included eight strikeouts and senior Madison Nault belt a solo home run as part of a 3-for-3 day at the plate.
