Saints stun Skippers in football opener; Shea blanks Moses Brown

PAWTUCKET – The St. Raphael Academy football team raised plenty of eyebrows in its season opener last Saturday afternoon at Max Read Field.

The Saints, who boast one of the state’s top Division II teams this year, faced North Kingstown, which has fielded one of the RIIL’s top D-I public school programs for the past few seasons, and came away with a 21-7 win.

The Saints, who reached the D-II Super Bowl this past spring, did it all to stun the Skippers. On offense, they produced an even 300 yards, with junior All-Stater Moses Meus totaling 98 on the ground on nine carries. Meus picked up 73 of the yards on a touchdown run in the third quarter to help give SRA a 14-0 lead.

Senior quarterback Andre DePina-Gray also ran for 74 yards on 18 carries and added another 39 yards through the air. He threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to junior Ethan-McCann Carter late in the second quarter to break a scoreless tie.

Senior fullback Napoleon DeBarros scored SRA’s other touchdown on an eight-yard carry in the final minute of the third quarter, and defensively, the Saints carried a shutout bid into the final minutes of the game.

Also claiming victory at Max Read Field was Shea High, which did all its damage offensively in the first half to record a 17-0 win over Moses Brown last Friday night in their non-league affair.

Quarterback Cam Seaver threw touchdown passes to Daishon Alves and Josh Madalena to lead the D-I Raiders, and Nilton Semedo kicked a 30-yard field goal.
