NORTH SMITHFIELD — North Smithfield residents say they were paid a visit by an unusual visitor in their yard over the weekend.
Liane Jalette told The Breeze that her two black Lab dogs were outside around 7:30 a.m. when they started barking like crazy.
“The hair was standing up on their backs. Their bark told me some type of animal was in the yard but I was thinking that it was a woodchuck or something,” said Jalette.
Though she looked out the window and saw nothing, she got a call from her husband Bob who had gotten a call from their neighbor to get the dogs inside the house because there was a black bear in their yard.
The bear has been seen multiple times traveling throughout the town, according to residents on Facebook. It was last seen on Mendon Road, Elizabeth Avenue, and St. Paul Street in Blackstone. Photos of the bear were also posted in the neighborhood to advise residents to be careful and not approach the bear.
“My favorite animal is the bear, so I went running out back to try and see him but when I got out he had come down from the tree and went into the woods behind our house,” said Jalette.
The last reported sighting of a black bear in North Smithfield was last year. The R.I. Department of Environmental Management is reminding Rhode Islanders to remove potential food sources like bird feeders or trash cans from their properties as black bears emerge with warmer weather.
