The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for much of Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts for Sunday, Feb. 7, with heavy wet snow expected.

The warning, in effect from 7 a.m. Sunday to 1 a.m. Monday for central and southern Rhode Island, calls for accumulations of 5 to 9 inches of snow and wind gusting as high as 40 mph.

A winter storm watch is in effect for northern Rhode Island and other parts of Massachusetts and Connecticut, with 4 to 8 inches of snow possible. The heaviest snowfall will be late Sunday morning into Sunday afternoon. Travel could be difficult.

Snowfall rates could hit 1 to 2 inches per hour at times.
