NORTH PROVIDENCE – The suspect in the stabbing death of a 60-year-old man inside Cumberland Farms on Smith Street in Centredale is due in court Monday morning, May 3.
Police haven't yet given an exact motive for why Christopher Carbajal, 27, allegedly stabbed Brian Cervini to death around 4 p.m. on May 1, but told The Breeze it appeared to be a random attack.
Several officers arrived at the store and tended to the victim, later identified as Cervini, but he did not survive the attack, in which he was stabbed multiple times near the shoulder blades.
Police dispatchers were made aware that the suspect had fled the store and was being followed by several witnesses. The witnesses were able to direct responding officers to the location of Carbajal as the suspect, who was apprehended in the area of 2026 Smith St. after a brief struggle in which a taser was used.
Cervini was transported to Rhode Island Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The knife used in the stabbing was recovered inside the Cumberland Farms.
Carbajal was held overnight at North Providence Police Headquarters, charged with murder, disorderly conduct, and resisting arrest. He was presented before a bail commissioner on May 2 and ordered held without bail at the ACI.
