NORTH PROVIDENCE – Longtime Ricci Middle School teacher Matthew Moniz was arrested on the first day of school Monday, charged with multiple counts of rape and sexual assault against a juvenile victim.
On Tuesday, the Barrington resident, 52 was indicted by the Statewide Grand Jury on two counts of first-degree sexual assault (rape), one count of second-degree sexual assault, and one count of third-degree sexual assault.
The alleged acts occurred in the city of East Providence between Feb. 1 and June 30 of last year, according to the Office of the Rhode Island Attorney General. The East Providence Police Department conducted the investigation.
Moniz was arraigned in Providence County Superior Court today, Sept. 15. He is being held without bail while he awaits his next court appearance.
Chief Arthur Martins said the North Providence Police Department acted on the authority of a state Superior Court warrant in arresting Moniz Monday, but the investigation was conducted elsewhere.
Moniz was immediately placed on leave.
“Please be advised that I was informed this afternoon that a teacher at Ricci Middle School was arrested by North Providence police shortly after dismissal today for an undisclosed non-school related offense,” said Supt. Joseph Goho in an email to families prior to Tuesday's indictment. “As more information becomes available, we will keep families informed accordingly.”
