Esther Eleanora Belcher, 92, of Foster, died peacefully on Saturday, September 25, 2021, at Rhode Island Hospital.

She was the daughter of the late David and Ida (Keljo) Oksanen, wife of the late Thomas Belcher Sr., and sister of the late Onni Oksanen, Martha Oksanen, and Katherine (Oksanen) Crawbuck.

She is survived by her children, Suzanne Belcher, Thomas Belcher Jr., Daniel Belcher, and Cathy (Belcher) Goglia, as well as her daughters-in-law, Pam Belcher and Lauren Belcher, and her son-in-law, Chris Goglia. Esther also leaves nine grandchildren: Thomas Belcher III, Caroline Belcher, Mason Belcher, Christy Goglia, Katie Goglia, Josie Belcher, Matthew Belcher, Michael Belcher, and Mark Belcher.

Esther was born at home in Foster, R.I., in 1929, and moved to Brooklyn, N.Y., with her sisters when she was 18. It was there that she met her husband, Tom Belcher, while working as a secretary for US Steel. The couple was married in 1951 and moved back to Foster, R.I., a few years later, raising their children on the same farm where Esther grew up.

Esther was a wonderful mother and grandmother, never failing to bring a smile to her loved ones’ faces. Even in her later years, she could always be counted on to sing and laugh, forever the life of the party. Esther enjoyed playing tennis at Rally Point, and, later on, she also enjoyed golfing while spending her winters with Tom in Naples, Fla. Esther and Tom were among the founders of St. Paul’s Church in Foster in 1971.

Her funeral will be held on Saturday, October 2, at 8:30 a.m., from the Winfield & Sons Funeral Home, 571 West Greenville Road, Scituate, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Paul the Apostle Church, 116A Danielson Pike, Foster, R.I. Burial will follow in St. Ann’s Cemetery. Calling hours are Friday, Oct. 1, from 4 to 7 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Paul the Apostle Church in Foster, R.I.
