I read with interest Jacquelyn Moorehead’s article on the plans for the athletic complex at Smithfield High School in the Sept. 9-15 edition of The Valley Breeze & Observer.
As a longtime field hockey official in R.I., I hope the plans include markings for a field hockey field. The Smithfield team plays on a deplorable field. Allowing them access to an artificial surface would greatly benefit the team members in the development of the skills and in their competition with teams who already have the advantage of synthetic turf.
If anyone watched any of the field hockey games aired during the Olympics, it was obvious that the game played on synthetic turf is a faster game that allows the development of greater ball handling skills. I hope that the Town Council will include these field markings in their plans.
