NEWTON, Mass. – North Smithfield’s Abby Fortin, who is a freshman on the Lasell University softball team, was recently named to the Great Northeast Athletic Conference’s All-Rookie Team after making an impact at the plate and on the mound for the Lasers, who won a program-record 28 games and reached the GNAC finals.
Fortin, who graduated from North Smithfield High last spring after earning Third-Team All-Division honors with the Burrillville/North Smithfield co-op team, batted .358 (38-for-106) and was among the team’s leaders in stolen bases (nine), on-base percentage (.404), and runs scored (22).
On the mound, she made 25 appearances, 19 of them starts, and posted a 9-7 record with a team-high 13 complete games. In 111 2/3 innings, Fortin struck out 73 batters, walked 33, and posted a 4.01 ERA.
