SMITHFIELD — The Smithfield High boys’ and girls’ cross country teams ended their Northern Division dual-meet seasons with 11-1 records for the second straight season, thanks to their quad-meet sweeps of Scituate, Woonsocket, and North Smithfield last Tuesday, Oct. 5, at Deerfield Park.
The boys’ team shut out all three opponents by 15-50 scores, and while the girls also blanked the Spartans and Villa Novans, they took a 27-29 nailbiter with North Smithfield.
In the boys’ meet, Smithfield swept the top 10 places, with seniors Unwana Okokon and Aiden Powers leading the way by tying for first place with their 18:01 times on the 3.1-mile course, and their classmate, Tyler Rose, finishing a second behind them.
Juniors Elijah Saddlemire and Camden Maione and sophomore Jason Padula also tied for fourth place with their 18:07 times, and rounding out the top 10 were junior Will Schiller (18:47), freshman Michael Goodson (18:53) and Marcus Miller (19:06), and senior Andrew Kelley (19:07).
The girls’ meet saw N.S. claim six of the top 10 places, but the Sentinels squeak out the win by taking four of the top eight spots. The top two finishers were sophomore Caroline Bosco (21:39) and freshman Maritza Howard (21:56); sophomore Julia Cavanagh placed fifth (22:32), and junior Lillie McCormick was eighth (23:43).
